About the blog. My own views
I started writing this blog in 2012 during the
Scottish independence campaign. Since then I’ve written a blog most weeks and
have become one of the most prominent Pro UK campaigners. The blog is mainly
about Scottish politics, but I do sometimes address other topics. Although my
point of view is pro UK and I am opposed to Scottish nationalism, I welcome
comments from anyone interested. As long as you write in a reasoned way I’d be
happy to read what you have to say. I quite frequently reply also.
About me
My name is Effie Deans. I was named after the
character in the novel Heart of Midlothian who is also known as “The Lily of
St. Leonards”. That’s the reason for the blog name. I live in Aberdeenshire. Prior to that I lived and worked in Russia
and the Soviet Union where I met my Russian husband. Because I lived in a
closed city in the USSR where foreigners were not allowed I had to adopt both
my husband’s surname and a Russian first name. This is still the name I use
professionally. But friends and family have always known me as Effie Deans.
My qualifications
I’ve studied at a number of universities including
Edinburgh, Cambridge, Copenhagen and Nizhny Novgorod and have a Ph.D. from
Cambridge. My studies embraced Theology, Philosophy and literature. I think
individually and try never to simply repeat what I read.
My interests
I’m interested particularly in the novels of Walter
Scott and Fedor Dostoevsky. I am most influenced of all by the philosophy/theology
of Søren Kierkegaard. I love the music of Olivier Messiaen. I enjoy writing
creatively and have published the novels Scarlet on the Horizon and An Indyref
romance, plus a collection of essays previously published in this blog. I am an
avid watcher of old films. I am a Russophile, but one who is always ready to
criticise what I perceive to be wrong.
